Table of Contents

Issue 1 (53) of “The Quarterly Journal of Saint Philaret’s Institute” is devoted to the liturgical theme. The Liturgical Studies section opens with P. F. Bradshaw’ translation of an article which examines the methodology of the study of Christian worship, particularly the origins of the liturgy, in relationship to the studies of Jewish worship. The article by Deacon Anthony Shchepetkin analyzes 27 canons and sequences published in 26 Old Russian liturgical collections and canon books of the 13th — early 15th centuries. The article by Z. M. Dashevskaya and N. L. Mikhailovskaya is devoted to the rite of preparation for Holy communion in the Serbian Orthodox Church in the 13th–17th centuries, which has its own specific features; special attention is paid to the personal and conciliar aspects of this liturgical sequence. The article by O. V. Kotov highlights the social and church-historical context of the emergence of the idea of nationwide repentance, its comprehension and development at the All-Russian Local Council of 1917–1918, as well as its implementation in the relevant liturgical rites prepared by the working group of the Council. The article by Priest Alexander Sukharev attempts to show how the understanding and experience of the liturgy is changing in various ecclesiological models proposed by the American theologian Cardinal E. Dulles.

Translation of Church Worship Services into Russian section presents an academic interview devoted to the issues of the language of worship, the problems of translation, the influence of worship on such aspects of church life as mission and catechesis, and the organization of life of church communities. Famous priests and laymen — specialists in the above-mentioned fields — took part in the interview.

Section Publication is represented by a document entitled ‘Eucharistic Prayers’, authored by Archpriest George Ivakin-Trevogin, confessor of the faith, clergyman of the Tashkent and Central Asian diocese from 1955 to 1980.

The Interdisciplinary Research section includes an article by Priest Rafal Bulowski devoted to the comparative analysis of the spiritual practices of Hesychasm and Sufism from the point of view of Sergey S. Horujy’s synergetic anthropology.

Reviews and Abstracts section contains an overview of a round table discussion on the eschatological aspect of ethics in the writings of Swiss theologian G. U. von Balthasar (Moscow, October 2, 2024), prepared by V. V. Granovsky; review of the round table “Kant: Alien Reason and the Language of Philosophy” (Moscow, December 6, 2024), prepared by E. A. Polyakova; book summary by A. A. Kornilov: Leonid Turkevich, Archpriest [Metropolitan Leontius]. Diaries and notebooks of the period of the Local Council of 1917–1918 (Moscow; Staraya Potlovka: Spasskoe Delo, 2024).

The In memoriam section presents a memorial review of the Russian-language writings by Ernst Christopher Suttner, a German priest and theologian.
