Table of Contents

Issue 2 (58) of the “The Quarterly Journal of Saint Philaret’s Institute”, published in 2026, features studies originally delivered at the conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. They are collected in the issue’s principal section, “The Paris School”: Treasure Old and New. The section opens with an article by A. Nivièr, which surveys the history of the founding of the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute and the first years of its existence. The article by K. P. Obozny is devoted to the Latvian students of the institute who subsequently formed the core of the Pskov Orthodox Mission. In his article, A. A. Biryukov reconstructs Archpriest Sergius Bulgakov’s concept of Orthodox theological aesthetics, as articulated during his rectorship at the St. Sergius Theological Institute. An English-to-Russian translation of Bulgakov’s lecture “Religion and Art” is appended to the article. In the article by P. B. Mikhailov, the question of the nature of theological language is examined through a comparison of the historical-theological conceptions of Archpriest Georgy Florovsky and Cardinal Jean Daniélou. A. A. Teslya analyzes how the concept of “secularization” is interpreted in the religious-philosophical works of V. V. Zenkovsky. The next article presents a summary of the conference “‘The Paris School’: Old and New Treasure”, which was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the St. Sergius Institute (Moscow, April 29–30, 2025). The review was compiled by I. Yu. Skorobogatova and Yu. A. Shtonda. The section ends with the publication of G. P. Fedotov’s article “On the Sacraments”, which was translated and edited for publication by A. V. Antoshchenko.

The section on the History of the Russian Orthodox Church begins with an article by A. I. Mramornov, which undertakes a fresh analysis of the evidence regarding the time, place, and circumstances surrounding the shooting of the martyrs indicted in the 1922 “Petrograd case”. K. K. Tabachnik’s article puts forward a hypothesis about how the idea of sobornost was transformed in Soviet celebrations and rites of the 1920s. A. N. Kashevarov’s article presents accounts of the Russian Church Abroad’s response to the Khrushchev persecutions, based on coverage in the “Bulletin of the Russian Student Christian Movement”. Archpriest Andrey Sapsay’s article explores the activities of the Council for Religious Affairs’ regional commissioners and how they affected Orthodox communities in the Kama region.

The Publication of Sources section offers a new translation and commentary of the Cain and Abel narrative (Gen 4:1–16), by M. G. Seleznev and A. A. Luppova. This work is part of a larger ongoing project aimed at producing a commented translation of Gen 1–11.

The Reviews and Abstracts section is represented by S. V. Konacheva’s review of A. V. Malyshev’s monograph Russian Kenotic Christology of the Late 19th – Early 20th Century (Moscow : PSTGU, 2025).

The issue concludes with congratulations to the teachers of the St. Philaret’s Institute on on the successful defense of their academic dissertations.
