Issue 1 (57) of the “The Quarterly Journal of Saint Philaret’s Institute” for the year 2026 includes articles devoted to biblical and patristic themes. Opening the Biblical Studies section is a paper by M. G. Seleznev and A. A. Luppova, written within the framework of a large-scale project to produce a modern, annotated translation of Genesis. The paper presents a new translation of the Tower of Babel episode (Gen 11:1–9), along with a commentary and a review of contemporary approaches to this pericope. The article by A. A. Luppova deals with the dating of the account of the Tower of Babel. The article by A. B. Somov discusses the phenomenon of so-called Jewish prayers appearing in Christian texts of Late Antiquity. In the study by G. G. Yastrebov, it is proposed to reconsider the interpretation of the Synoptic accounts of Sabbath healings in the context of an analysis of the Old Testament, Qumran texts, and Rabbinic literature. A. Yu. Garbuznyak’s article presents an exegetical analysis of Rom 13:1–7. S. V. Kareva’s study analyses the meaning of the metaphor υἱοθεσία (“adoption”) as used in several of the Apostle Paul’s epistles.
The Patristics and Patrology section begins with an article by Protopresbyter John Behr, which focuses on the use of classical paideia (παιδεία) in early Christianity. The article by K. V. Stefanova explores St. Ambrose of Milan’s notions of conciliar consensus and his conception of the Church’s unity. In his article, J. Williams proposes a new original approach to the problem of hierarchy in Dionysius the Areopagite, employing the concept of the ‘fractal,’ and examines the question of the vocation of the laity in the treatise “On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy”.
The Translation of Primary Sources section is represented by the work of A. V. Anashkin, which includes a translation from Latin of the message from a group of bishops of Southern Gaul to Pope Leo I the Great, accompanied by an introductory article and a historical-philological commentary.
