Issue 4 (52) of “The Quarterly Journal of St. Philaret’s Institute” opens with the section Church, State and Society in the History of Russia, containing new materials on the history of the Russian Church in the late 19th — first half of the 20th century. N. V. Goltsov’s article is devoted to the history of the largest and most representative church and public association of Petrograd in 1920–1922 — the Society of Orthodox Parishes of Petrograd and its province. The focus of P. G. Rogozny’s article is the “iconoclastic” activities of the Bolsheviks in 1918–1921. The article by I. V. Petrov analyzes the problem of the relationship between the anti-Bolshevik governments and the episcopate of the Orthodox Church during the Civil War in Russia. The article by Yu. V. Zelenyanskaya examines the chronology and specifics of the process of seizure of church valuables in the “palace city” of Peterhof in 1917. The article by K. K. Tabachnik, based on the materials of the northwestern region of the USSR, examines the program of the Soviet government to replace the main Christian sacraments and rituals with civil “red” rites, which became widespread in the 1920s. The article by Archpriest Andrei Sapsai is devoted to the ministry of church singers in the Perm diocese in the 1960s and 1980s.
The History of renovationism section begins with an article by S. S. Kulpinov, which explores the ideology of the Renovationist movement on the example of the “Union of Church Revival”, headed by bishop Antonin (Granovsky). The article by priest Nikolai Evseev examines the origin and development of the renovationist movement in the Tula Diocese in 1922–1927. The article by priest Maxim Toporov is devoted to the Renovationist schism in the Kuban and the role played in it by “archbishop” Vladimir (Ivanov) during the Great Patriotic War.
The section History of Religious Movements in Russia is represented by an article written by B. B. Sazhin and R. M. Babanina, which examines the causes of the marginal nature of communitarian Christian movements in the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century, using the example of V. K. Syutaev’s activities.
