This article explores the concept of nationwide repentance, as conceived by the All-Russian Local Council of 1917–1918 and reflected not only in its discussions and resolutions but also in the very theme of the liturgical rites specifically developed to express this spiritual experience. Particular attention is given to its manifestation in the Service of Supplication for the Salvation of the Russian State and the Rite for the Days of Nationwide Repentance. These liturgical forms, abolished along with most of the Council’s decisions under Soviet rule, hold fundamental significance for the spiritual tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The study is based on an analysis of the Council’s documents, historical sources, and liturgical texts, which provide insight into how the idea of nationwide repentance was conceptualized and incorporated into the liturgical life of this period. The article seeks to uncover the theological meanings of these rites, describe their liturgical elements, and reconstruct the historical context surrounding the development of nationwide repentance.
The article traces the evolution of theological emphases and liturgical practices of nationwide repentance throughout different stages of the Council’s work. It demonstrates that the rites developed at the Council not only reflected the Church’s response to historical upheavals but also framed repentance as an instrument of spiritual transformation for society. These rites illustrate the Church’s efforts to define its role amid the tragic events of the era, experiencing repentance first alongside the people and subsequently on their behalf. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the significance of nationwide repentance in Church life and its potential FOR contemporary theology and liturgical practice.national repentance, All-Russian Church Council of 1917–1918, liturgical rites, liturgical creativity, days of national repentance
