Our Friend Ernst Christoph Suttner Has Passed Away
Today we had the sad news that a friend and colleague of our Institute, Ernst Christoph Suttner, has passed away at the age of 92. (04.10.1933–22.10.2024)
Fr Christoph graduated from the Papal Gregorian University’s Collegium Germanicum and Hungaricum and the Eastern Institute (Collegium Russicum). He was a Doctor of Theology and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Between 1975 and 2002 he was Professor of Patristics and led the Eastern Churches Faculty at Vienna University. From 1979 to 2000 he participated in the International Commission for Orthodox-Catholic Dialogue.
For many years Fr Christoph was a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Philaret’s Institute. He participated in several conferences held by our Institute and the Transfiguration Brotherhood, including: “Living Tradition” (1997), “The Language of the Church” (1998), “Church Tradition and School Tradition” (1999), and “Memory and Forgetfulness in Church and Society: Summing up the 20th Century” (2000).
Fr Christoph Suttner gave several lectures on Church History at SFI and published in the journal “Orthodox Community” (“Pravoslavnaja Obshchina”).
No one who knew Fr Christoph personally will forget his true Christian spirit, brotherly fellowship, or selfless labour to bring the eastern and western churches closer together.
May God grant rest to Fr Christoph among the dwellings of the righteous!
